I may be wrong, but is it gauche to request something (ask for a drawing for free) when the artist is offering commissions?
What do you do if the requester is a friend? I want to say "I don't have time," but when I'm not working on commissions, I'm just doodling for myself anyway...
I'm just really uncomfortable with this, and I need some advice.
ETA:
Upon further thought, I think I have a complex about being told to do anything. Even when it's something fun or that I would ordinarily enjoy, if someone says "OMG, do this!" or "You HAVE to do it!" my immediate response is to recoil and say "No, I don't!" and shut down.
I think if people posed it like "Do you think you could do this?" or "Would you mind drawing X?" I wouldn't mind as much. I still might say no, but my discomfort would be greatly decreased.
I still want your thoughts, though, guys - what do I say?
But nah, if you're offering commissions and someone - seriously, of course, there's always the "haha oh man you should draw that now" comment that you are free to disregard or follow, in my opinion - comes after you for free art, they're just being rude. 's how I see it, anyway.
(When people know they're being jerks and choose to be that way anyway ... ugh. Depressing.)
at least, those are determining factors I use. If there isn't some benefit for you, then maybe its not worth it.
That being said, doing a favor for a friend is different. It really depends on whether you want to or not. And if you don't, you should just be honest and tell that person you'd rather not. However if its fun for you or you feel indebted to this person or want to give art as a gift... its up to you!
And it really wasn't like a "hey, I'd like a birthday card for my friend" or something, it was just "THIS IDEA IS FUNNY, you should draw it!" So I just apologized and said I was pretty pressed for time in terms of art, and that I might do it later, which is all true. I just haven't been doing a lot of art for myself, which I'd like to get back into - I love making people happy, but I also like doing my own thing, and I need time to do that! Maybe I'll open up requests later in the year, though, and ask if she still wants me to draw it... or something else entirely!
Thanks for your input, bro, I really value your opinion on stuff like this.
